Depending on your setup, if the gun is sighted for 200 yards, you might want the scaled target at about 30 yards or your shots could be off as much as 2 inches. 223 it will matter more - and will depend on where your sights are zeroed.

With a handgun which might be zeroed at 10 or 25 yards, it's not going to make much difference, especially given the bullet hole diameter.
